Dandruff is the excessive amount of dead skin that results from skin rejuvenation in the scalp. Psoriasis is a skin disorder that affects the skin as well as the body’s joints. Many in the medical field believe that Psoriasis and Dandruff are somehow linked together. Let’s examine the facts and see if there actually any similarities between the two skin conditions.

The first connection is that they are both skin conditions. Psoriasis appears on the skin in the form of scaly red or white patches. Dandruff is dead skin cells that are pushed to the top of the scalp as new skin cells are forming. They are both chronic conditions and dermatologists are capable of treating both.  Psoriasis can cover the entire body from head to toe while dandruff is strictly a scalp condition.

There are different types of Psoriasis and the most common type that can be remotely linked to dandruff is the type called Guttate Psoriasis. Many small round spots characterize this condition. These spots can show themselves over large sections of the body in most cases, in the upper body, arms and legs and the scalp. It is reported that this type of Psoriasis is caused by Strep Throat. If can be treated under a doctors care while dandruff can mostly be cured or treated with an over the counter shampoo.

In about 65% of most cases of Psoriasis, they are considered to be mild, 25% are considered to be moderate and only about 8 % are considered severe. If there were any link between Psoriasis and Dandruff then it would fall under the mild condition category. Unlike dandruff which has several known causes, Psoriasis cannot be pinned down to any real cause, but there are some ideas, for example, it is believed that the condition could be a disorder along the lines of excessive reproduction of skin cells. The other possibility it could be has to do with the immune system.

The treatments of Dandruff include special shampoos, regular hair washing, less hair products in the hair. There are many different approaches in treating Psoriasis because every person is different, some are treated with ointments and others are treated with vitamins. While there are some similarities, dandruff and Psoriasis can be considered two different conditions, with separate causes and with separate styles of treatments.
